Méabh De Búrca, Looking at Water,
Plastic Bottles
In 2009 I began creating a collection of sculptures from single use plastics that I collected from local beaches around Dublin, Ireland. The project was called 'Ag amhairc ar uisce' which translates to 'Looking at water'. I wanted to show the endless possibilities of everyday overlooked materials, to reclaim them from becoming waste and to give them a new significance. Over ten years on, I am sad to say that single use plastics such as the plastic bottles I used to create this work have not been banned and are still being produced at an industrial global scale. How have these companies not created an alternative, when we know about the the implications of plastic pollution, the Pacific Gyre and the energy it takes to recycle plastics. This photo was taken at Keem Bay, Achill Island, Co Mayo, Ireland.
